Until the middle of the 19th century all cloth and yarn was coloured by dyes using natural materials such as plants, insects, shellfish and minerals. Since the introduction of chemical dyes our eyes have become accustomed to the bright colours that they produce but recently the craft of natural dyeing has been rediscovered bringing back the wonderful hues of a bygone age.
